The Museum of Ice Cream—a candy-colored exhibit dedicated to all things ice cream-related—sparked something of an instant social media sensation when it debuted as a pop-up in New York City's Meatpacking District back in 2016, drawing multi-block lines of visitors eager to sample different ice cream flavors and snap selfies among the pop-up's Instagram-friendly installations. Now, five years and two additional locations later, the museum is officially headed to Chicago, bringing its famed sprinkle pool and a host of other new features to a massive venue on Michigan Avenue.
Located at The Shops of Tribune Tower at 435 N Michigan Avenue (formerly the longtime home of the Chicago Tribune), the 13,544-square-foot space centers around a 60 to 90-minute tour that takes visitors throughout a series of 14 ice cream-themed installations, ranging from a pool of faux sprinkles—perhaps the exhibit's most Instagram- and TikTok-famous feature to date—to a dessert-inspired putt-putt golf course. Along the way, guests can sample five ice cream confections, like a pink "Chicago dog" sundae, and pose for photo ops.
In addition to its regular roster of installations, the Michigan Ave location will showcase a series of Chicago-themed attractions. Visitors enter the exhibit aboard the pink "Sprink-L" (inspired, as you may have guessed, by the CTA's Pink Line), which takes them to a 3,500-square-foot "speakeasy" where they can buy cocktails, snacks and other confections. Plus, in a Museum of Ice Cream first, the Chicago space will also include an educational feature called "The Museum of Modern Ice Cream," an interactive exhibit that displays historical ice cream memorabilia.
There's no word on how much tickets for the tasting tours will run, but Museum of Ice Cream experiences in other cities are fairly pricey—anywhere from $38 to $49, depending on which city you're visiting. At the Chicago location, the speakeasy bar and cafe will be open to the general public if you don't feel like springing for a full tour (though you still might have to wait in a super-long line).
Ready to experience the sugar rush of the Museum of Ice Cream? The exhibit isn't set to debut until summer 2022, but you can join a waitlist online if you're feeling extra excited.
